The Old Religion

Before the resurgence of the Church of the Seven Good Gods, most people worshipped and placated a wide variety of spirits, small gods, and fey. The Church teaches that all of these are amongst the 7^7 demons, and suppresses their worship. This clean division into Good and Evil was not found in the Old Religion, which instead taught that all spirits are potentially dangerous, but also potentially beneficial. The key to the Old Religion is that it taught how to dwell alongside these beings safely, and how to ask them for favours.

The Old Religion is still commonly followed by the peasents in the countryside, often alongside worship of the Church. Many spirits, etc. are still encountered outside the cities, and many of them provide magics that are useful to the farmer and forester. Within the city, the Old Religion has few followers, and the average citizen is unlikely to encounter magic and the supernatural outside of the formal Church services.

Magic
Placate [dangerous spirt/small god/fey]
Bribe [spirit/small god/fey]
Dominate [spirit/small god]
Protected by [spirit/small god]
Friend of [spirit/small god]
Touched by [great spirit/small god]

Amulets, often made of material taken from a tree, stream, etc. in which a spirit, etc. dwells, are commonly used to assist in contacting the spirit, etc. However, they provide no specific bonuses. Without such an amulet, the person would need to travel to the spirit's location before they could communicate.

Guides
The common worshipper of the Old Religion has specific relationships to a small number of spirits, plus a store of superstitions that may assist in dealing with others. However, some gain great insight, and can contact a wide range of beings, some of great power. Such people are known as Guides. Typically the Guide is also responsible for conducting such rituals as burials, blessings, and the creation of amulets. Recently, the Church has been ruthlessly supressing the Guides, with trial and execution for Demon Worship being a common occurance. Therefore, true Guides are becoming increasingly rare and isolated.
